Chapter Thirteen
We hadnât opened the manor for events or lodging since the night of Heather and Maxwellâs weddingâwhich turned out to be a good call.
Because now, we got to go back to the crime scene for another round of sleuthing. This time, not letting any carpet fiber or strand of hair go unexamined.
Although Bakewell PD and their forensic team had swept the place already, a second look wouldnât hurt. Maybe this time, fresh eyes would do the trick.
And so, off we went.
Since the guesthouse was a 300-square-meter space with two separate suites, two bathrooms, one master bedroom, two guestrooms, and a main hall, we needed more than two persons for the job. So, Dayton and Loreta joined us.
âAll right,â I called to get their attention as we entered the guesthouse that smelled a lot like bleach from all the disinfecting. âIâll take the bridal suite. Detective Mack can take the groomâs suite, Loreta, you take the west guest bedroom, Dayton, you take the one on the east. Then, we can reconvene here in the main hall after.â
âSounds good,â Mack nodded, already headed for the grand stairs. âRemember, weâre looking for something out of place. Holler if any of you find something.â
From there, we all headed to our designated place.
The bridal suite still had that crime scene look about it because of the yellow police tape hanging loosely on the doorframe. It took little effort for me to swipe it down with a hand, though.
As I stepped in, I could still see the faint mark of white chalk against the vinyl; right where Heather had collapsed.
I tried not to look at the spot a second longer and began looking at every centimeter of the room instead.
I knew it would not be easy when Mack suggested we go back to where it all started, but where else should we have looked? So, I kept my eyes peeled for anything. Even a lone fingerprint on the dusty shelves would do.
Anything would do.
I started on the floor, going down on all fours and checking every furniture leg for anything stuck under it. I lifted the carpet and moved some chairs around, hoping to find something stuck beneath it just like the time weâd found something in my late grandmotherâs bedroom.
It would be a cruel fate if history were to repeat itself, but Iâd take it if it meant solving Heatherâs death.
Finding nothing on the floor, I checked every cabinet and drawer, and every surface of the room.
I ran my hand under the bedsheets and even felt the mattress. I touched the top inner part of the vanity drawer, collecting dust on my fingertips. I even studied the walls and the ceilings. But nothing. I meticulously looked at the window glass, hoping there was something in there. Maybe if I looked hard enough, Iâd find something.
Half an hour passed by and I returned to the main hall, very disappointed that my resolve hadnâtâ¦resolved anything.
When I joined Mack, Dayton, and Loreta back at the main hall, their expressions gave away their personal dismay.
